Health damage caused by cement
One Health damage caused by cement One of the problems associated with the production of bricks and cement is the production of dust, which is mainly generated during the grinding of raw materials. Dusts from the construction industry can be coarse powders or fine dusts. But while a person may immediately notice that he is exposed to the coarsest dust and can therefore remedy it, at the same time he does not realize that he is in contact with the finer ones, which reach the lungs almost undisturbed. And, in this case, even in the least dangerous condition, with exposure to inert dust, not soluble in water and with low toxicity, inflammatory processes of the respiratory tract can develop.
The most common diseases.
Â
But, when micro-dust is not inert, there are several occupational diseases to which workers in the construction sector are exposed. Among the most dangerous and frequent are those that damage the respiratory tract, such as chronic broncho-pulmonary diseases, occupational bronchial asthma, lung cancer and silicosis. Obviously, the health risk and pollutants to which the operator is exposed vary according to the work process that involves him, the type of equipment used and the material processed. In particular, cement and some products used in construction contain silica stone and silica powders. The latter, if inhaled, lead to the formation of nodules where the lung tissue heals. When the nodules become too large, breathing becomes difficult and serious health consequences can occur. As regards cement production, in particular, another source of dust is production kilns, the emissions of which must be captured and adequately treated.
Examples of contemporary buildings
Bamboo buildings are no longer associated with the idea of poor architecture, but today represent the frontier of elegant and innovative green architecture. In 2018, the first International Biennial of Bamboo Architecture presented 18 constructions, designed by 12 internationally renowned architects including Kengo Kuma, Vo Trong Nghia, Anna Heringer, Li Xiaodong Atelier and Simon Velez, which were built in an agricultural setting.
Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction is a Thailand-based company that specializes in the design and construction of bamboo and earth architectures that combine modern organic design with 21st-century engineering. One of their most impressive works is theÂ
Bamboo Sports Hall for Panyaden International School, an ecological bamboo sports field of 782 square meters that takes the shape of the lotus flower, symbol of Thailand and Buddhist teachings.
In China, architect Mauricio Cardenas Laverde has designed an eco-sustainable bamboo house in Baoxi Longquan, a structure that explores new ways of building using lightweight and easy-to-assemble aluminum connections, combining what is called “vegetable steel†with real steel to create an industrialized construction system.
Looking at Europe, on the other hand, in addition to the very popular bamboo furniture objects, we find the Carabanchel Housing, a residential complex located in Carabanchel on the outskirts of Madrid.
It is a building of architectural value equipped with renewable energy production plants. Here bamboo is used on the façade and allows light to enter with a very special effect. In this building, bamboo has no structural function but plays the important role of solar filter, visual protection and cladding.
